e you seen video of the big blazes out west. Your parents have told you about the Yellowstone fires of 1998. Does this inspire you to join the ranks of thousands and serve your country on the fireline. You need to know some of the conditions you will be working in. It is not all fame and glory. If you have never fought fire before you will need to take steps to make sure you are ready to work long hours in hot and dry conditions. Fires typically occur in remote and inaccessible terrain. You can expect to hike for miles in steep and rocky country. Just getting there is half the battle. Once you are on the fire the real work begins. You will be cutting fireline with hand tools,Jordan Retro 7, chainsaws, and if you are close enough to a road you may be involved in a hose lay operation. There are several types of jobs you can get in wildland firefighting. You could be a member of the following teams: Engine Crews,Jordan 6 7 Gold Medal Pack, Hotshot Crews, Helitac Crews, Fire use Modules, and Smoke jumpers. I this is your first season to fight fire I suggest you try to get on an Engine Crew. You will be able to get some good training (classroom and field). Once you have spent a season or two on an engine you will be ready to move on to another type of crew.

First you will need to take S130-190. It is the basic wildland firefighter class. You are required to have this class before you can step foot on a fireline. I would suggest you make the effort to get this class on your own. It will give you a better chance of getting hired. I would also suggest you contact the districts you are interested in working. If at all possible go have a face to face meeting with the Engine Captains. These are the guys who will be hiring the next round of firefighters.

Okay so you are wondering what to do now. It is time to start getting in shape. When and if your are hired you will be required to take a physical fitness test. You will have to hike 3 miles with a 45 pound pack in under 45 minutes. This will more than likely be given on your first day. So get ready for it your job will depend on it. If you are unable to pass the test you will be sent home.

The best way to get ready for the test is to run, hike, do pushups and sit ups. The main thing is to be active. You will need to be in good shape to be safe on the job.

Once you are hired you can expect to be active in a Physical fitness program on the job. You will be required to participate. It is vital to your crews success and safety for everyone on the module to be in top physical training.

You can expect to work long hours in hot, dry, and smokey conditions. But it is worth it. I have been in the field for over 12 years and it has been a great time. You will love it if you put your heart and soul into it.
